Project Spotlight

Advising Schools on How Best to Support Adoptive Families

I was recently invited by a primary school, which prides and promotes itself on being trauma-informed.

However, when the senior leadership team re-examined the needs of their current children within their school, they realised that the trauma training they had received previously did not refer to adopted or looked after children.

I shared with the Senior Leadership Team what adopters wish schools know about adoption from research conducted with adopters. The small things that would make their children's lives a little easier. The small ways that could make a massive difference to the mental health of adopters.

This school identified a need of their children and their staff and took action to make a difference to those they care about. They held true to their values of being a trauma-informed school.

And if you are a teacher, pastoral lead, or sendco and wish to better understand the small ways that you can show support to adopters and their children at your school, then please do get in touch.

When a Regional Adoption Agency in the South of England reached out to me for advice on how they could best support their adoptive dads, I was happy to share our research insights from the adopters’ mental health projects, and my experiences of running a 12 week support programme for adoptive dads..

My advice enabled them to confidently develop a business proposal to develop their own dads’ group.

Talking about adopters’ mental health and their support needs should feel hopeful.

After all, you’ve taken the first step to making a difference for adopters and their families.

Adoptive Dads’ Mental Health and Support Needs

Foundation doctors encounter a wide range of ethical and legal issues during their first two years of work after graduating from medical school.

Despite medical ethics being a key part of most modern undergraduate curricula, Foundation doctors can struggle with the issues they see.

So after asking Foundation doctors what ethics and law training they believe they need once they start their medical career, I set about designing training packs for Foundation Schools to deliver within their trusts.

On behalf of NHS England North West, I collaborated with a range of medics to design five training packs, which consisted of two hours training materials, a facilitator’s guide and feedback template.

After piloting and evaluating the training packs, they are now used in over 20 trusts across the UK.

Client Reviews

“I have had the pleasure of working with Laura over several years. she has supported and guided myself and my colleagues in the field of scientific and medical ethics. Her knowledge and insights have allowed us to explore and acknowledge our ethical footprint and impact within the work that we do and how that affects our outcomes for ourselves, our patients and scientific partners. Laura has increased our understanding and self awareness. It is always a delight to work with her and we look forward to future projects.”

— Client requesting laboratory ethics training

“Laura and I have worked together over the past few years on a few different pieces of work, on every occasion her insight, opinions and advice regarding the ethical issues have always been welcomed and enhanced the outcome of our projects and workflows. She is passionate about her field of work and this really shows and is felt in every interaction with Laura. One thing for sure if that the quality of work is always improved once Laura has had input, due to her attention to detail and her curiosity to always question and challenge (in good faith!) even the small stuff. I look forward to continuing to work with Laura on future projects and recommend her as an expert in ethical aspects of health and medicines especially with respect to donor issues, where the bulk of our interaction has been, on a national and international level”
